The coasting steamer ST. BRANDAN, belonging to J and A Gardner, Glasgow, while on her way from Skye to Glasgow last Friday night, foundered on a rock at Cairns of Coll. The crew of nine, including the captain, Mr.Dugald MacDonald, a native of Mull, were saved. The ST. BRANDAN had called at Carbost, Skye with barley for Talisker distillery, and was proceeding to Glasgow with 200 tons of grain and a quantity of whisky valued at #8000.
The ST. BRANDAN was in the vicinity of Cairns of Coll about 9.30pm. A strong SE wind was blowing. It was extremely dark, and with showers of rain and hail, visibility was very bad. It was impossible to see Ardnamurchan Light. The ST. BRANDAN struck a surface rock about 10 o'clock. The crew stuck to the vessel as long as they could, but when it was seen she was in danger of sinking about 5 o'clock on Saturday morning, two lifeboats were lowered, and the seamen abandoned their vessel. For fully three hours they were buffeted about by a strong wind, accompanied by heavy showers of rain. Fortunately for them, the Fleetwood trawler CITY of YORK came on the scene, took them on board, and afterwards landed them in Tobermory.
Captain MacDonald said it was one of the worst nights he had ever experienced at sea.
