Archaeology Notes

NL94SW 5 939 441.

Souterrain, Greenhill, (Site): In the late 19th century a souterrain was exposed in the sand-dunes about 300m NW of Greenhill House (NL 942 439). According to a plan made at the time, it consisted of two converging passages, each at least 6m long, which united to form a slightly curved gallery some 9.2m in length. The orientation of the site is not known, but the passages were about 0.61m to 0.76m wide, while the gallery was 1.2m wide, except at the inner end, and also at the point marked 'a' on the plan, where an intake occurred on one side, reducing the width to 0.91m. The walls were corbelled and stood to a height of about 1.5m in six courses; much of the stone-lintelled roof remained in situ. The souterrain was presumably entered from one or both passages, but neither passage was traced to its full extent. No finds are recorded and the remains have been covered up again by drifting sand.

RCAHMS 1980, visited 1977; G Goudie 1917.

According to local information, the souterrain was sited at NL 939 441; no trace of it was seen.

Visited by OS (D W R) 25 June 1972.
