The [lighthouse] keepers kept in regular touch with Castlebay by means of the mail/relief boat.... The boatmen had a 'refuge' on the island for use if they were stranded by bad weather.

Field Visit (7 May 2010)
This single-storey cottage, built on an artificially created platform on the S side the track up tho the lighthouse, finally lost its pitched roof during the winter of 2001/2002. Aligned NE-SW, it is 8.2m by 4.3m over cement-mortared walls 0.6m thick generall standing to the wallhead at 1.7m. The centrally-positioned entrance, 0.95m wide and 1.6m high to the lintel, opens onto the track and is flanked by two windows, each set into an opening 0.6m wide by 0.9m high that is splayed internally. The fireplace in the E gable, with its brick back and decaying cast iron insert, is 0.9m wide and high and 0.25m deep. The fireplace in the W gable is of similar dimensions but has been blocked.
