Archaeology Notes

NK06SW 26.05 centred 0355 6465

A small Nissen hutted accommodation area visible on the RAF WW II vertical air photographs (NLA 57, 5005-5006, flown 21 February 1943), is situated on the north-western permeter of the airfield. The camp is also visible on the postwar series (106G/Scot/UK 108, 4003-4004, flown 23 May 1946).

At least 26 huts, mainly of the Nissen type are visible on the 1943 images (ibid), increasing to 28 by the date of the 1946 series (ibid).

In addition a further blister hangar at c.NK 0372 6475 is visible on the 1946 air photographs, but not the 1943 sortie, for which the entrance taxiway is still depicted on the OS 1:10000 scale map (1975).

The NE part of this camp and the site of the blister hangar have been built over by a housing estate, whilst the southern section has been completely removed.
