Archaeology Notes

NK06SW 26.02 centred 03393 64237

The technical site for the airfield was situated on the W side, immediately NE of the crossroads between the B9033 and the B9107.

The area is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 108, 4003-4004, flown 23 May 1946), which shows that at that date there were at least 30 buildings including a type T2 transportable aircraft hangar. In addition at least six emergency air-raid shelters are visible on the photographs.

The T2 aircraft hangar has been removed though the concrete base is still visible on a series of air photographs taken in 1988 (All Scotland Survey [Jasair], 07 88 060-062, flown 6 May 1988), along with at least two other buildings and at least one air-raid shelter. The parachute store noted by Smith at NK 03335 64275 is visible on the 1946 images (ibid), but had been removed by the date of the 1988 series (ibid)
