Archaeology Notes

NK04NE 12.16 07858 46269

A ancilliary airfield building about 60m in length is situated in a field 400m E of East Thunderton farmsteading. It is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK109, 3013-3015, flown 23 May 1946) which shows it with a pitched roof and the N and S elevations as being alternately inset. Three further huts are visible on the air photographs along the fence line to the NW.

The building is also visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1969 (OS 69 176, 060-061, flown 6 June 1969), but by this date the roof shows evidence of collapse. The structure is also shown on the OS 1:10000 scale map (chart copy 1973) and the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map clearly shows it in plan form. It is not known what this building was used for.
