Archaeology Notes

NK04NE 12.08 centred 0870 4605

What may be the main 'Mess' area for Peterhead Airfield is situated to the W of a minor road running S to Howemuir from the A950. One 'H' shaped hut group and three other larger hut groups with several huts are visible on RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK109, 3012-3013, flown 23 May 1946). Dispersed amongst the huts are at least 20 emergency air-raid shelters.

Also visible on the air photographs about 300m W of the 'Mess' group is another small group of huts set in an L-shape at the SE corner of a field.

At least four of the larger buildings/huts and several of the smaller huts survive in an area now annotated as 'Industrial Estate' on the current OS 1:2500 digital map.
