Archaeology Notes

NK03SE 19 0533 3001 and 0535 3000

See also NK03SE 2.

Location formerly entered as NK c. 0532 3000.

Two cast iron guns have been reported in the vicinity of Old Slains Castle (NK03SE 2), one of them on a mock carriage and the other lying loose.

Information from Mr Philip Robertson, Senior Inspector of Marine Archaeology, Historic Scotland, 7 February 2007.

The date and significance of these cannon remain unclear. They may have been recovered from one or more of the historic shipwrecks found nearby, rather than associated with the castle itself.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 7 February 2008.

Old Slains: the unmounted gun lies just beside the castle at NK 0533 3001 and the mounted one is at NK 0535 3000

overlooking the bay to the north.

Visited by Mrs M Greig (Aberdeenshire Council, Planning and Environmental Services), 16-17 February 2008.
