Archaeology Notes

NK03NE 25 0542 3702 and 0536 3701.

(NK 0542 3702 & NK 0536 3701) Stone Cists found AD 1818 and 1841 (NAT).

OS 6" map, (1959).

Cists containing skeletons and grave-goods were found in 1818 or 1821 and about 1841 during the removal of sand from a conical mound.

Name Book 1868.

The earlier find at a depth of 8' by Mr Grant of Merrytop (NK 055 365) (Mr Grant, Merrytop), was formed of slabs of gneiss and measured internally 4'3" by 2'2" deep. It was unpaved and was covered by a rough slab of slaty rock and a flattish block of granite. It contained two beakers (Clarke type N2); seven flint arrowheads, at least one of which was barbed and tanged; a flint knife; a large unworked flint flake; a bracer of polished felstone; and parts of the skeletons of a man and a boy of 12 or 13, accompanied by the remains of a dog. The parish doctor took the bones and the other articles were given to Peterhead Museum. Later reports confuse this cist with NK03NE 15 possibly because of the way it is reported by Donald. (NSA 1845) The second cist found by Mr Cantlay of Peelharry (NK 024 378), (Mr Cantlay, Peelharry), contained 'One urn, human bones, a stone axe and a lot of flint arrowheads.' (Name Book 1868)

Name Book 1868; J Anderson and G F Black 1888; D Wilson 1863; J Anderson 1886; D L Clarke 1970; New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; J Abercromby 1912.
