On both sides of the Ythan estuary shell mounds and occupation areas, associated with great numbers of flint flakes and chips occur (T F Jamieson 1868). Two of the mounds, on the E bank of the river about 1/2 mile and 1 1/2 miles respectively from its S extremity, were investigated. Finds include burnt stones and animal bones, charcoal etc (C E Dalrymple 1868). Both leaf-shaped and barbed and tanged arrow- heads have been found in the area (W Ferguson 1890).

About half a mile S of the settlement (NK02NW 2) on a section of raised beach, quantities of flint pebbles, cores and flakes were found in 1951.
W Kirk 1953
The raised beach referred to by Kirk is centred at NK 0115 2563. Numerous pieces of flint, none of them worked, were picked up at the time of investigation.

Simpson (information from Dr W D Simpson, King's College, Old Aberdeen) is quoted by the OS field investigator as stating that occupation sites are exposed from time to time by shifting sand dunes all along the Ythan estuary, and that no concentration in any particular areas have been identified. Nothing was seen at the time of investigation.
