(NJ 9393 6293) Church & Burial Ground (NR) (Supposed Site of)

OS 6" map, (1928).

See also NJ96SW 1 and NJ96SW 17.

A circular mound, conical at its apex and about 12ft in height, traditionally a place of interment, has been accepted as the site of the original parish church (NJ96SW 17). The minister and doctor state that this church was traditionally supposed to have stood '... a little to the east of ... Tyrie Mains and near the circular mound ... the remains of a burial place having been discovered here ...'

OS Name Book 1870.

The mound, as described by the Ordnance Survey Name Book, (ONB 1870) was removed in 1964 by Mr Bell, (Mr G L Bell, Tyrie Mains, Pitsligo, Aberdeen), who stated that it was composed of 'driven earth' and appeared artificial although no finds were made. There is no evidence of a church and burial ground here- abouts (see NJ96SW 17).

Visited by OS (NKB) 8 March 1967.
