Watching Brief (24 July 2017)

NJ 97041 48151 (NJ94NE 0004) A watching brief was undertaken, 24 July 2017, during topsoil stripping for a house and garage adjacent to Deer Abbey. The topsoil was up to 1m deep as the area had been within the walled garden for Pitfour House. A path had been recorded on the early

maps and geophysical survey. This was excavated and the section showed the path was 1.5m wide and constructed of pink sandstone chips with a sand and sandstone foundation. A stone drain was cut to the level of the clayey sand natural subsoil on the E side of the path. A small number of 19th- and 20th-century china sherds were recorded.
