Archaeology Notes

NJ92NW 19 c. 90 26

Several glass beads from Cloisterseat (farm buildings at NJ 908 265), formerly in the collection of John Sturrock, are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland (RMS), formerly the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS).

They comprise:

FJ 19 - Grey opaque ground with slaty green whirls, 2.2cm diameter

FJ 20 - Fragment of a dark brown bead, whirled with yellow, 2.3cm diameter (both Guido Group 14: north Scottish decorated annular beads). FJ 40 and FJ 41 - Both of black glass, c. 1.2cm diameter (Guido Group 7: undecorated globular beads).

FJ 43 - 'of whitish paste or agate' (not listed by Guido).

(Though Guido states (p. 198) that these beads were found together, this is not stated in PSAS (1890), and a large number of finds of different material have been made on Cloisterseat farm at different times.)

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1890; M Guido 1978.

There is no change to the existing record.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 13 July 1998.

Finds of barbed-and-tanged and leaf-shaped arrowheads, axes, spearheads, whorls and beads also noted in this area.

NMRS, MS/712/108.
