Archaeology Notes

NJ91SW 88 9008 1242

On the E side of the track at NJ 9008 1242 there is a pile of granite blocks. Some of them are rectangular and share the same measurements as the memorial NJ91SW 86. Others are granite capping-blocks measuring 1m in length by 05m wide; these may be derived from the dismantled railway bridge at Parkhill.

NMRS, MS/992/5, visited 1 November 1998.

The railway bridge at Parkhill to which reference is made is probably to be equated with the viaduct at NJ 888 141, for which see NJ81SE 24.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 23 November 1998.

There is no change to the existing record.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RJCM), 3 March 1999.

Information contained in a letter from David Paton, the owner of Grandhome estate, states that this pile of granite blocks contains the remains of the parapets of Persley Bridge, which were removed when the bridge was widened in the 1980s. Mr William Roger Paton, the present owner's grandfather, had contributed towards the cost of the construction of the bridge and David Paton prevailed upon the local Council to give him the parapets when they were dismantled. Some of the stones were used to form garden walls to the N and S respectively of Grandhome House (NJ81SE 36.00).

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 14 May 2002.

NMRS, MS/1123.
