OS 1:500 map, (Aberdeenshire), (1901).

Not to be confused with NJ90NW 23.

The site of the market cross of Old Aberdeen, erected c 1545, which consisted of an upright stone set on a stepped base and bore an effigy of the Virgin Mary above armorial panels.

Name Book 1895; J Anderson and G F Black 1888.

The effigy was removed and the remainder of the cross dismantled and scattered, about the beginning of the 19th century.

In 1880 the heraldic panels, which include the Royal arms and those of Bishops Dunbar, Stewart, and Gordon, were recovered and are now mounted on modern steps and shaft at NJ 9390 0839.

Visited by OS (JLD) 11 September 1952.

The original socket was in the Archaeological Museum, King's College, in 1888. The original site is now under a modern road.
