Formerly entered as LIN 523.

Extends onto map sheet NJ90NE.

In 1834 a sea-lock was built at a cost of 1500 pounds sterling for the purpose of connecting the canal with Aberdeen harbour. Its location was at the S end of the basin, and a drawbridge was built across at the Lime Quay. There was also a 'fly-boat house' at Kittybrewster.

In September 1854 the North of Scotland railway line overlaying the canal was opened.

J Lindsay 1968.

The entrance to the canal was formerly situated in Aberdeen harbour (NJ90NE 7.00) about 150 ft E of the angle between the Regent and Waterloo Quays; its line is now taken by the docks branch railway to its junction with the main line at Tillydrone (NJ 932 081) and by the GNoSR main (Aberdeen - Inverurie) line thereafter, until it leaves the map sheet at NJ 900 096. Place-names along its route refer to the canal.

A Graham 1969.

The level of the canal appears to have dropped from about 40m OD to sea level across this map sheet, and the former existence of numerous locks may be assumed, particularly to the SE of Kittybrewster (NJ c. 932 077).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 October 1994.

In 1854 the route of the canal was overlaid by the North of Scotland railway, starting at Aberdeen Harbour. This route, which can be traced on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheet lxxv) headed N, then WNW, and finally NW out of the city. Passing just to the E of Kittybrewster it headed N into the open countryside. It then headed NW, then W, passing just to the N of the village of Woodside, before turning NW again.

The locations of the sea-lock and the drawbridge are not traceable, as the 1st edition map was surveyed after the closure of the canal.

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 2 May 2002.
