See also NJ82NW 9.

Three stone axes, found at least forty years ago in Bourtie parish, probably on Hill of Barra, (NJ 80 25) are at Barra Castle.

Visited by OS (RL) 20 March 1969; Information from Mrs Irvine, Barra Castle.

Four stone axes, which are known or assumed to have been found on the former Barra Estate, are in the possession of Mr N Q Bogden, Barra Castle.

1. This polished stone axe measures 175mm in length by up to 25mm in thickness and tapers from 70mm in width at the blade end to a pointed butt. One end of the blade is broken and it is possible that the axe was discarded before it was finished.

2. This broken, highly-polished stone axe measures at least 131mm in length by 53mm in width at the blade end and up to 25mm in thickness. It is broken at the butt end and the blade is chipped.

3. This large stone axe measures about 247mm in length by 80mm in width at the blade end and up to 45mm in thickness. Most of the surface of the axe is very rough but the blade has been polished smooth.

4. This stone axe measures 170mm in length by 72m in width at the blade and 33mm in thickness; some attempt has been made to polish the blade and the rounded butt is chipped.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 22 November 1996.
