Archaeology Notes

NJ82NE 33.13 8845 2812

For adjacent farmhouse (Museum of Farming Life), see NJ82NE 33.05.

This stone-lined well was discovered during trench-digging for drains in October 1996. It is well-built, of drystone construction and measures about 0.6m in internal diameter by 6m in depth; the E side has been modified by the insertion of a lead pipe leading to the adjacent bothy [farmhouse, NJ82NE 33.05] and the infilling material of this contains brick of later-19th-century appearance. A recent capping with substantial reused stones includes a window sill or lintel similar to those used in the adjacent buildings.

It is proposed to cap the well and retain it (with a hand pump and trough) as a museum feature.

Information from Mr R Turner (National Trust for Scotland), 16 October 1996.

NMRS, MS/848/4.
