(NJ 8417 1442) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1928)

For nearby hut-circle and rig, see NJ81SW 48.

There is a round cairn, about 74ft in diameter and 12ft high in the wood that covers the top of the the Slacks, Hill of Marcus, about 500 yards south-east of the farm-steading of Bendouch. It is entirely of stones, devoid of any covering of soil or vegetation, but its surface has been much disturbed.

In the immediate vicinity, amongst the trees, are numbers of small stone cairns about 12 feet in diameter and 1 foot in height.

J G Callander 1925

The cairn, 21.0m in diameter and 2.5m high is as described. There is no evidence of a chamber. Owing to the density of the trees and vegetation the smaller cairns were not located. One small mound was seen and it appears to consist of stones, although grassed over it is probably a clearance mound.

Visited by OS (EGC) 25 October 1961

I found a series of mounds (at least 20) in the wood in May 1971. The large cairn showed numerous signs of having been dug into.

Information from J B Kenworthy, 10 November 1971.

This group of monuments is situated on a steep NW-facing slope at an altitude of 170m OD.

NMRS, MS/712/79 (visited by GRC/AAS 7 June 1994).

A cairn is situated in coniferous woodland on the NW flank of The Slacks, standing within a scatter of hut-circles and small cairns (NJ81SW 48). It measures about 23m in diameter by 2m in height and its surface is largely devoid of any vegetation, revealing that the body of the mound is made up of a mass of small boulders and stones. A hollow in its top indicates that the cairn has been dug into.

One of the hut-circles of the surrounding settlement is situated immediately to the SE of the cairn.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 23 March 1997.
