Archaeology Notes

NJ80NE 29 c. 89 05.

In 1858 some labourers dug up, on the Skene Road near Aberdeen, a red earthenware vessel containing a coin hoard, among which were three billon placks of 1589, minted in Edinburgh. (Presumably Lindsay is alluding to Queen's Road - NJ 8905 - which leaves Aberdeen for Skene, rather than Skene Street - NJ 9306 - in the centre of Aberdeen.)

J Lindsay 1845.

The present whereabouts of the coins from this 17th-century hoard are not known, but the likely findspot is probably close to the mill-dam that lay about 120m SW of the Mill of Maidencraig (NJ80NE 18). The dam is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869, sheet lxxv).
