Archaeology Notes

NJ66SW 21.08 centred 62548 63156

A former domestic site or accommodation area for Boyndie Airfield is situated at a cross-road between tracks from Rettie farmsteading, the main A98 road and Crows Wood. All that could be seen on the date of visit were at least twelve hut bases a pile of concrete rubble, the concrete bases for a further three larger buildings and the fragmentary remains of at least one Stanton type air-raid shelter. Part of the site is now in use for hay storage.

The domestic site is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/ UK 108, frames 3055-3056, flown 23 May 1946), which show that at that date there were at least 41 huts, mainly of the Nissen type with two larger buildings, one of which the gable end and water tank tower survive at NJ 62582 83100 and at least seven air-raid shelters.
