Archaeology Notes

NJ62SE 27 697 204

Vertical air photography (58/RAF/1296 F22 0101, dated 15 October 1953) has recorded an area of rig-and-furrow cultivation in coniferous woodland on a S-facing slope. It is overlain by forestry ploughing

NMRS, MS/712/10.

The following site has been identified while checking vertical aerial photographs on loan from Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk Estate to Grampian Regional Council. Full information is held in Grampian Regional Council SMR.

NJ 697 204: area of rig and furrow.

M Greig 1995.

A small area of broad rig-and-furrow is visible on RAF vertical aerial photographs (106G/SCOT/UK 139, prints 2033-34) taken in 1946 about 650m SE of Backbrae farmsteading (NJ62SW 110). The rig now lies in coniferous woodland and was not visited during the RCAHMS survey of Strath Don. It is aligned roughly NNW and SSE, and lies on a gentle N-facing slope.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 9 May 2003.
