Archaeology Notes

NJ61SW 19 6340 1150

(Location cited as NJ 634 115). Vertical air photography (Jasair NJ 61 35-88-019, dated 8 October 1988) has recorded the remains of a small farmstead on a W-facing slope.

M Greig 1995; NMRS, MS/712/10.

(Classification changed to Cottage; Croft). The remains of the steading of this croft, which are situated 300m SE of the present farmstead of Culthibert (NJ61SW 30), comprise three buildings arranged in a Z-plan. The best-preserved building, which is probably a byre, contains three compartments and measures 23m from NW to SE by 5.1m transversely over walls 0.6m in thickness and up to 1.8m in height. The building immediately NW was probably a cottage but is incomplete and that to the SE is now largely obscured by field-gathered stones. The latter was probably a barn and a horse-engine platform is visible adjacent to its NE side.

Only the cottage and the byre are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869, sheet lxiii) and the barn was evidently added sometime between 1869 and the end of the 19th century (1901, sheet lxiii.SW). In 1869 the improved land extended to about 15.8 acres (c.6.4ha), but by the end of the 19th century the croft had been reduced in size, and a small strip of ground on its E side had been added to the neighbouring croft (NJ61SW 20).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS; RJCM), 28 October 1998.
