(NJ 5222 2472) Black Arthur's Well (Site of) (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959)

The well was filled in long ago. Traditionally Lord Arthur Forbes (known as Black Arthur) was killed while drinking here during the Battle of Tillyangus (NJ52SW 6) in 1571. Simpson (1949) says that its site is still pointed out.

Name Book 1866; W D Simpson 1949.

There is no trace of a well at the published site.

Visited by OS (RL) 12 September 1967.

Nothing is visible of this well; it lay in a natural NE-facing amphitheatre that now forms part of a cultivated field.

Visited by RCAHMS (ATW; PC), 9 September 1998.
