Archaeology Notes

Activities

Field Visit (June 2006)

1 ½ storied. Walls dressed granite with long horizontal blocks alternating with rows of three small square sectioned blocks set end on. Sandstone at

corners and around windows and doors. Roof slate. Originally L-plan, but an addition at the W end formed the present T plan.

First shown on 2nd edition OS map 1900 (1899) as L plan building. The East Lodge is not shown on the estate map of 1847 or the 1st edition OS map of 1870 (1866) and would therefore appear to have been built in the period between c 1870 and 1900. It is of different plan to the West Lodge (NJ52NW 4.03) but the detailing of the stonework is the same suggesting that they were built at around the same time. The difference in plan and the subsequent enlargement of the East.
