Leith Hall, West Lodge

1 ½ storied. Walls are dressed granite with long horizontal blocks alternating with rows of three small square sectioned blocks set end on. Sandstone at corners and around windows and doors. Roof slate with two gabled dormers in the S face. Porch slated with wooden fronting and four rustic pine pillars painted cream (bases of all but one replaced with concrete). Two rectangular sandstone chimneys, each with two ceramic chimney pots. Dormer windows 6 astragals. Ground floor windows four astragals. Wooden garage to E, wooden shed behind. Gable walls harled.

The West Lodge is not shown on 1847 estate map or the 1870 (1866) OS map but does appear on the 1900 (1899) OS map. It would appear to have been built between c 1870 and 1900. The wall building style is the same as the East Lodge (NJ52NW 4.04), suggesting that they were built at much the same time, although the East Lodge was later extended.

The West Drive carriageway has double wrought iron gates (050C) with rectangular stone piers (050A, B) flanked by pedestrian gates (050D: S one opens, 050E: N one fixed) with a lower stone pier each (050F, G).

050A, B The main gate piers are 750mm square, built in a soft buff/grey granite using large dressed blocks with chamfered corners. They are 2.15m high to the base of the pediment. The pediments are c700mm total height with three square sandstone ‘steps’ surmounted by a ball on a tapering neck. The pediments are more worn than those of pillars F and G. These are exactly the same as the equivalent pillars on the East Lodge gate (062). They are similar to but not the same as garden gate piers 070.

050C Main double gates. Wrought iron using round and rectangular sectioned iron. Date 1901 and initials CENLH for Charles Edward Norman Leith-Hay. Each half of gate 1.63m wide and 2.77m maximum height.

050D, E Wrought iron gates of similar pattern but with riveted roundel decoration. 890mm wide, 1.85m maximum height.

050F, G Side pillars. C530mm square, 1.7m high to base of pediment. Built with much darker grey granite with alternating big blocks and rows of three small blocks. The granite and style is the same as the West Lodge. The pediments are c630mm maximum height of pinkish sandstone. They have three squared stone steps but the ball finial is set on a more rounded vase shaped neck, unlike the main piers. The finials are less worn than those of the main piers.
