Archaeology Notes

NJ31SE 57 3846 1267

The ruins of these two cottages, which are shown roofed on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869 and 1903, sheet lx), stand isolated in cultivated ground 220m NE of Newe Avenue farmsteading (NJ31SE 42.06). The walls of each have been reduced to a height of no more than 0.7m, and they are partly obscured by tumbled stones and field-clearance. The W cottage measures 12.8m from E to W by 5.3m transversely over walls 0.6m thick, and the E cottage 13.6m from E to W by 5.8m transversely over walls 0.7m thick. Each cottage had a garden immediately to the N; the gardens are conjoined, and part of their perimeter is marked by a line of trees growing along a stony scarp.

Visited by RCAHMS (SPH), 5 March 1998.
