Archaeology Notes

NJ26SW 151 23011 62172

Eight-sided pillbox measuring 4.57m across, set on N side of railway and in W corner of former large military camp (now Pinefield Industrial Estate) with many extant military buildings.

Visited by J Guy, 2 December 1992.

NMRS, MS/712/8.

A type 24 pillbox is situated on the S perimeter fence of the former Pinefield Barracks. The structure is N of the railway and to the rear of an area now being used as a bus garage.

The eight sided building is constructed in stone and has stepped recessed loopholes, the entrance is to the N. The W side of the entrance has been damaged and some stonework from what may have been a short blast wall has been dislodged and removed. Some very large blocks of cut stone have been used in the construction of this pillbox. In addition there is a concrete roof, and concrete lintel above the entrance and the surrounds to the loopholes are also of the same material.
