Brae Of Revack

The ruins of this farmstead are situated on the leading edge of a high, S-facing terrace overlooking the Auchernack Burn. It comprises a dwelling, the S wing of what was once an L-shaped range immediately to the N, a barn W of the range and a smaller structure to the E. The dwelling measures 15.4m from E to W by 5.4m transversely over walls standing up to 2m in height at the W end of the N side, where there is a small blocked window. There is a central doorway in the S side, and the footings of an outshot are attached to the E end. All that remains of the L-shaped range is its S wing, the S end of which stands 1.8m in height. It has three entrances, one of them blocked, in its E side. The building immediately W of this wing has been reduced to its lower courses; it has opposed entrances in its NW and SE walls and was probably a barn. The small structure on the E side of the steading stands 0.6m in height, but an entrance into it is not visible.

With the exception of the smallest, all the buildings are depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet XLVIA). The Ordnance Survey Name Book (Inverness-shire, Book 1, p.28) records Brae of Revack as 'A croft house with suitable out offices, one storey high, thatched and in good repair: property of the Right Hon. The Earl of Seafield, Castle Grant'. Only the dwelling is shown roofed on the 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet XLVIA).
