Activities

Field Visit (30 March 2019)

This grass-grown weapons pit is situated upon a narrow terrace on a steep slope overlooking the foreshore about 30m S of the U1456 public road. It measures 5m from WNW to ESE by 3.2m transversely and 1.2m deep. A spread bank up to 0.2m high protects it on the NW, SW and SE. An undated sketch map of the battery in the Fort Record Book held at the National Archives at Kew (WO192/248), identifies this as ’18. Gun Pit’.

Visited by HES, Survey and Recording (ATW, AKK, KLG), 30 March 2019.
