Archaeology Notes

NH78SW 8 67 83.

The site of the castle of Edderton, erroneously supposed to be one of the two founded by King William in 1179, lies near the sea.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845; Orig Paroch Scot 1855; R Bain 1899; J Noble 1909.

There seems to be some tradition that the castle was at Blackpark (Information from Mr Clarke, Edderton) (NH 67 83). But see also NH78SW 6. - Edderton Mains (NH 7168 8380) - thought to be the site of the castle of Edderton. The site commands a wide view of the Dornoch Firth and also the Meikle Ferry between Ross and Sutherland. But the rubble foundations of Edderton Mains do not have the appearance of 12th century work.

Visited by OS (R D L) 16 May 1963.
