This stone bridge was built in 1684, succeeding a number of timber predecessors, and incorporated a small prison cell. It was destroyed during a storm in January 1849, and was succeeded by the suspension bridge NH64NE 141.00.

Casual Observation (July 2021)
NH 66515 45138 Low water in July 2021 revealed the footings of one of the piers of the Ness Bridge completed in 1685 under the direction of Mr James Smith, ‘Overseer of His Majesties [James VII] Works in Scotland’ and paid for by Inverness Burgh Council. The bridge, illustrated by Sandby, Daniell, Turner and others, was also photographed in the 1840s by Cosmo Innes, before being swept away by flood in 1849. Remains of at least two other pier bases may be inferred by shoals in the river.
