Archaeology Notes

NH59NW 10 546 999.

Centred at NH 546 999 is a settlement of five circular stone-walled huts (A-E) and a contemporary field system. Conspicuously placed in the area is a small cairn (NH59NW 9).

"A" measures 9.0m in diameter between the centres of a wall spread to

c.2.0m with an entrance gap in the SE. Outside the N arc is another curving wall which seems as if it is part of an earlier hut (c.13.0m in diameter) into which this hut has been inserted.

"B" is ill-defined and about 11.0m between wall centres. Entrance gap in SE.

"C" is 10.0 in diameter between wall centres, with the entrance gap in the NSW. Inside the hut some 1.5m from the N arc, is an arc of stones, heavily overgrown, of uncertain derivation and purpose.

"D" is c.14.0m between centres of an ill-defined wall with an entrance in the SSE.

"E", the best preserved, is 9.0m in diameter between the centres of a wall spread to 2.5m. Entrance in the SE.

The field system is marked by clearance heaps and lynchets, and the W side is bounded some 30m W of "A" by an apparently contemporary wall. Surveyed at 1/2500 and 1/10 560.

Visited by OS (A A) 25 September 1974.
