Archaeology Notes

NG87NW 2 8063 7572.

The church of Gairloch was originally dedicated to St. Maelrubha, and perhaps erected by him in the seventh century; it stood near the centre of the burial-ground at Gairloch (NG 8063 7572). There are no remains whatever of it. It was a common kirk of the Canons of Ross.

Little is known of the church history of Gairloch before the Reformation. There was a church here before 1628 which was probably rebuilt in the middle or latter part of the seventeenth century, most likely on the same site as the original church.

A new church is said to have been built in 1751 which was thatched, and had fallen into ruin by 1791, when the present church was built (NG 8071 7559).

J H Dixon 1886.

The parishes of the Diocese of Ross, constituted 1124, include the parish of Gairloch.

N Macrae 1923.
