(NG 2247 9659) Dun (NR) (Site of)

OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1903)

J Wedderspoon (see F O Blundell 1913) refers to two islands in Loch an Duin about 20 yards apart, both of which have the appearance of being artificial, and said to be defended sites. A causeway from the shore (said to be submerged by the RCAHMS) is continued between the two islands.

That to which the published name refers, is described by the Name Book (1878) as "a small green island" the site of "an ancient fort", and by he RCAHMS as having the shape of a truncated cone covered with vegetation, unlike the other islands in the loch.

F O Blundell 1913; Name Book 1878; RCAHMS 1928, visited 1914.

The scant remains of a dun defined by a discontinuous outer wall-face around the edge of a natural islet which has possibly been artificially enlarged to accomodate it.

Visited by OS (N K B) 7 July 1969.

Activities

Field Visit (8 June 1914)

Dun Boraigeo, Strond.

On the northern shore of the Sound of Harris and south-east of the southern end of the township of Strond is Boraigeo Point, a rough rocky point rising 20feet above high-water at the most and surrounded by water for a considerable part of the day. On the landward side are the remains of a stone wall of considerable strength. The rock is so rough and irregular in shape and of such limited area that it could only have provided a temporary refuge for a very small number of people.

RCAHMS 1928, visited 8 June 1914.

OS map: Harris xxvii (unnoted).
