Archaeology Notes

NF87NW 27 centred 8122 7569

The airfield is situated to the N of Sollas township with the runway located S of the sand dunes.

The area where the runway was situated has been returned to agricultural land and all that could be found on the date of visit were three concrete hut bases on the N side of the A865 at Sollas opposite the Co-operative Store. There is little evidence to show that there would have been many buildings constructed at this airfield.

J Guy 2002; NMRS MS 810/12, 113-16

The airfield is visible on vertical air photographs taken in 1946 (CPE/Scot/UK189, 4287-4289, flown 10 October 1946), which shows the grass runways and one aircraft hangar at NF 8098 7548. The hangar has the appearance of a half size T2 type, similar to those found at Benbecula Airfield (NF75NE 4.00).

No evidence could be seen on the air photographs of the three huts or hut bases on the N side of the A865 at Sollas noted above.

The airfield is also visible on a vertical air photograph by the Luftwaffe (1940) which has annotated the extent of the runways and the single aircraft hangar.
