Archaeology Notes

NF86NW 22 825 676.

'A conspicuous standing stone 2.1m high, 3.1m wide and up to 0.45m thick is located approximately 210m W of small summit cairn built on Airigh na Gaoithe chambered long cairn (NF86NW 21). It is oriented at 260 degrees with respect to true N.

The alignment, approximately 275m, runs W from the long cairn and consists of (from E to W) -

(a) A leaning stone about 7m from N side of long cairn

(b) A possible fallen stone

(c) A leaning boulder

(d) The above standing stone

(e) A boulder

Activities

Field Visit (23 September 2010)

A long slab aligned E and W stands amongst heather and rough grass on the W shoulder of Airigh na Gaoithe. The slab measures 3.3m in breadth at its base by 0.3m in thickness, rising to a rounded peak 1.65m above the ground. Its N face is rough and angular, having been split from outcrop, and its S face displays a weathered cortex. Supposedly forming part of an alignment, the rest of the stones seem to be elements of other structures or no more than natural boulders.
