(Location defined as NF 8241 5636 to NF 8449 5930). Uist causeways: this complex of interlinked causeways and bridges links the islands of Benbecula (to the S), Grimsay (in the centre) and North Uist (to the N), carrying the A865 public road across a wide area of intertidal sands and shallow channels. These structures form part of the A865 road improvement scheme (NF 8365 8599 to NF 8067 5501) that is detailed under NF85NW 43.00, and extend across the boundary between the parishes of North and South Uist.
The 1972 edition of the OS 1:10,000 map depicts a bridge immediately N of the S end of the major causeway, at Rubha na Laire [name: NF 830 562]; the causeway then turns sharply to the E (at NF 826 567) before another short bridge (at NF 8308 5689). This causeway ends on Eilean nan Clach Corr [name: NF 833 569], and the road passes onto Grimsay at Ardnastruban [name: NF 846 572]. Proceeding northwards, the road passes from Grimsay onto a further causeway (at NF 8482 5780), and crosses a further short bridge (at NF 8487 5806). Successive causeways lead to the islands of Eilean a' Ghiorr [name: NF 848 585] and Garbh-Eilean [name: NF 840 588] before reaching North Uist at Aird a' Mhaide [name: NF 844 592].
