Activities

Field Visit (16 August 1915)

Cup-marked Stone, Buaile Risary.

Towards the east side of the steep northern slope of the green grass-covered knoll, Buaile Risary, the site of a dun (NF77SE 11) about ½ mile north of Ben Risary, at an elevation of about 200 feet above sea-level, is a large irregularly shaped stone slab, 4 feet 5 inches long, and 2 feet 4 inches broad at its widest part, bearing at least seven cup-marks on the upper surface, which is much weathered. Three of the cup-marks measure from 2 ¼ to 2 ¾ inches in diameter and from ½ inch to ¾ inch in depth, while the others vary from 1 ¼ to 2 inches in diameter and are barely ½ inch in depth.

RCAHMS 1928, visited 30 July 1914.

Location Notes: The stone is located just below the summit of Bualie Risary hill, on the NE facing slope of the hill in moorland and rough grazing within a large clearing surrounded by mature sicta spruce forest. The remains of an aisled roundhouse and shieling huts are spread around the summit of the hill. There has been considerable movement and re-configuration of stone, and it is possible that the panel is not in its current location. The trig point lies about 40m to the SW. There are clear views from the panel to the NE.

Panel Notes: This a roughly triangular stone measuring 1.4x0.7m and jutting out from the hillside to a maximum height of 0.4m. The upper surface slopes gently to the NE and has a number of natural depressions of various shapes sizes. There are 6 possible cupmarks on the S section of the stone, 3 of which are more than 6cm in diameter including one relatively deep cup.
