Archaeology Notes

ND47NE 2 4642 7849.

St Peter's Chapel. Muckle Skerry. The late Mr A Black, formerly keeper of the Muckle Skerry lighthouse, reported that the foundations of a rectangular building, lying NE and SW could be seen on the small promontory called Broti Ber.

RCAHMS 1946

At ND 4642 7849 is a sub-rectangular flat-bottomed hollow c.0.6m deep, and c.13.0m NE-SW by c.5.0m broad at the NE end and 4.0m at the SW end. There are no foundations visible and the hollow has more the appearance of a quarried platform to house a modern building than a chapel. The present light-house keepers believe that a structure to the E of the light-house (ND47NE 4) is St Peter's Chapel.

Visited by OS (AA) 8 May 1973

RCAHMS identify this site as that of St Peter's Chapel, but R Lamb believes it is at ND 4662 7841 (OR 496).
