Archaeology Notes

ND34SW 55 30199 40760.

At ND 3020 4076 on level ground is an oval stone-walled hut measuring 8.0m NW-SE by 7.0m transversely between the centres of a peat-covered wall, mutilated in the SE arc and spread to 2.5m elsewhere. An upright block stands on the outside edge of the wall in the SE. The entrance is not evident. There are no traces of contemporary cultivation.

Visited by OS (I S S) 15 March 1972.

(ND 3020 4076) Hut Circle (NR)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1976)

This U-shaped enclosure, previously identified as a possible hut-circle (Mercer and Hill 1985, No.94; figs 70 and 88), is situated in open ground immediately SE of a bridge (ND34SW 464) carrying a trackway across a small watercourse. The enclosure, which is open to the SE, measures 5.4m from NW to SE by 5m transversely within a grass-, rush- and heather-grown stony bank up to 2m in thickness and 0.6m in height. The bank appears to comprise material scraped-up from the interior.
