Archaeology Notes

NC96SE 23 9716 6301.

NC 9716 6301. A sub-rectangular enclosure which has been cut through by an old turf dyke. The remains on the S side of the dyke are almost square on plan measuring about 15.0m across. It is formed by large boulders now mainly turf-covered. On the N side of the dyke, the enclosure has extended for 11.0m, and this end is somewhat rounded. It is less pronounced than the S part, and one gets the impression that it was reutilised at the time the dyke was constructed. It is quite clear that the enclosure pre-dates the dyke, which in turn pre-dates the dry stone dykes nearby. The enclosure appears to have served as a stockpen.
