Archaeology Notes

NC91SE 19 97266 11362.

This E-shaped plan farmstead consists of a hay barn in the central range with a threshing barn behind and the site of a water wheel visible in the back (N) wall. There is a stable with a hay loft in the W range and a single-storeyed byre in the E range. On the N side there are partially open shelters either side of the barn. The buildings were derelict and partly ruinous on the date of survey and were in use only as a clipping shed and workshop space.

Visited by RCAHMS (GJD), July 1994 and 1995 ; see NMRS MS 744/104.

Site Management (26 September 2018)

E-plan framstead consisting of hay barn in central range with threshing barn behind, and site of water-wheel visible in rear (north) wall. Stable with hay-loft in west range and single-storeyed cow byre to east. North side partly open shelter-sheds on each side of barn. (RCAHMS Survey text July 1994)

Also on the site is a single storey plus attic red standstone building with 3-bay frontage and three rooflights. Probably the grieve's cottage built in 1869 referenced in the Inventory of Sutherland Estate Papers Acc. 10853, National Library of Scotland. There is a single storey range of outbuildings at entrance gate and a roofless stone building to the south of the steading.
