(NC 0555 3197) An Dun (NR) (site of)

OS 6"map, Sutherland, 1st ed., (1878)

An Dun Brough (NR)

OS 6"map, Sutherland, 2nd ed., (1907)

The remains of an ancient Pictish tower situated on the coast about 3/4 mile N of the village of Clashnessie, on a bold headland, the only vestige of which now remaining is a low green mound almost level with the surface of the ground and is composed of earth and stones.

Name Book 1875.

Not a trace of artificial fortification remains. The situation is a narrow near-level shelf on the NE tip of a promontory, showing evidence of sporadic digging, probably turf-cutting.

According to Milne (J Milne, Old Schoolhouse, Stoer), the last remains of this feature were washed into the sea about 20 years ago.

Visited by OS (F R H) 14 May 1962.

There is no trace of antiquity on this headland. Despite Milne's evidence, it is highly unlikely that there ever was a structure here, and certainly none has ever been known to the local inhabitants. They have always applied the name "An Dun" to NC03SE 4, which has been well known for at least three generations and the Name Book 1875 description fits it perfectly. This is undoubtedly a misplot on the old 6".

Visited by OS (A A) 1 August 1974.

No change to the previous field reports.

Visited by OS (J B) 3 August 1980.
