Archaeology Notes

NB56SW 63.01 centred 52804 63282

The accommodation camp for Eorodale Radar Station is situated on the W side of a minor road leading S from the A857 at Lionel.

The camp extends for about 300m from the A 857 and within this area several structures survive. At NB 52890 63153 is the former generator set-house which has now been converted into a dwelling house. At NB 52857 63190 is a building measuring about 13m by 4m overall, in which 'Thistle bricks' have been used in the construction and at NB 52865 63156 is a building now in use as a garage. The concrete bases of other huts and buildings were also noted within the enclosure to the N. Some of the structures are connected by a series of concrete paths and at least two air-raid shelters were noted, one at NB 52772 63343 (ngr obtained by hand held GPS Garmin) to the rear of the modern Telephone Exchange.

The camp is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 104, 3334-3335, flown 19 May 1946), which show a group of at least twenty two buildings and huts, the huts being mainly of the Nissen type within an enclosure.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), 4 August 2005

A visit by Mr Martin Briscoe in May/June 2007 has found further remains relating to the radar station. There is an IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) mast base at c.NB 53202 62476. The base is in the distinctive 'maltese cross' form. A further brick built building was noted at NB 52417 62868 with what may be an engine bed nearby. These could possibly be associated with the water supply to the accommodation camp.

Information to RCAHMS via e-mail from Mr M Briscoe, 12 June 2007
