Archaeology Notes

HZ27SW 223 centred 2235 7242

A small military camp consisting of at least 16 huts is visible on a RAF WWII vertical air photograph taken in 1942 (RAF, WL 10, 1.111, flown 4 July 1942). The camp is situated at the S end of North Haven at the W end of the narrow isthmus between Bu Ness and the rest of Fair Isle. The camp presumably was built to accommodate military personnel based at the radar station at Ward Hill (HZ27SW 217).
