Stone Cist found AD 1865 (NAT)

OS 25" map, Orkney,(1900).

'A mound or tumulus where a stone coffin or cist was dug up in 1865' lies about 30 yds SE of Niven (HY 7717 5506).

(RCAHM apply the description of HY75SE 15 to this site).

Name Book 1879.

An amorphous sandy knoll of uncertain character.

Visited by OS (NKB) 20 July 1970.

(Formerly scheduled as Neven, mound). Descheduled.

Field Visit (July 1979)

A shapeless sandy rise difficult to distinguish from general

broad ridge from sandblow infill behind the sheep dyke.

Field Visit (27 April 1994)

This mound was visited during the Orkney Barrows Survey but ws not recorded in detail. A cist may be visible. The mound is probably visible from all directions, as the area is fairly flat.

Field Visit (1999)

A cist was found in an amorphous sandy knoll in 1865. There are no indications of any archaeological remains in the area at present. Ref.: RCAHMS (1980), #19.
