Archaeology Notes

HY64NE 14 c. 69 45.

Marwick mentions 'a mound at Helliehow, that is now called Cot Brae', in his discussion at the Sanday 'Hogboon' legends. A search of the area revealed no obvious mound near the farm which is now deserted.

H Marwick 1923.

Activities

Field Visit (1979)

In discussing Sanday legends of the Hogboon (haug-buandi,

haug-bui, mound-dweller) Marwick mentions a mound at Helliehow

that is now called the Cot Brae, with which a Hogboon was

associated. [R1]

Helliehow is presumably helgi-haugr holy mound. But a

search of the area revealed no obvious mound near the farm, which

is deserted.

Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) 79.
