Archaeology Notes

HY51SW 10.09 centred 53856 11741 and c.5384 1180

All that could be seen of the accommodation camp for Rerwick Head Battery, which is situated in a field on the S side of a track about 100m N of Rerwick farmsteading are a series of concrete hut bases, two buildings standing above ground and three air-raid shelters.

The two structures which remain above ground are at HY 53856 11741 and HY 53894 11671, one of which is in use as a farm building. The two air-raid shelters cut into the low cliff imemdiately above the High ater mark at c.HY 5384 1180. Both retain a flight of stairs at their SE end. A third earth covered air-raid shelter is situated about 31m NE of the farmhouse.

The camp is shown and annotated on the PRO layout plan (WO 192/264), which notes various stores, mess halls, a hospital, recreation hut and an officers mess. No evidence for the officers mess could be seen nor for the motor transport park on the N side of the track.

The accommodation area is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 137, 4038-4039, flown 3 July 1946), which shows the complete camp, mainly of Nissen type huts, but with several pitched roofed buildings.
