Archaeology Notes

HY51SW 10.05 53968 11891 and 54027 11813

Two engine rooms were recorded at Rerwick Head Battery. That at HY 53968 11891 is situated about 30m E of where the track to the main gun site turns due west.

Constructed with a barrel vaulted concrete roof and stone gable ends there is a concrete ventilator placed centrally along the top of the roof. In addition, a small concrete platform, possibly for the storage of petrol, has been built at the SW corner of the hut. The windows in the stone gable ends have concrete lintels as has the entrance doorway which also has a four slit air ventilator immediately above. Internally the concrete engine mountings survive.

The hut is presently in use as an animal shelter.
